Vizio SmartCast TVs get AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support
Vizio casts update net over older TVs
Vizio has started rolling out support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, bringing Apple’s streaming and smart home features to their SmartCast 3.0 TVs.The over the air update started on the 31st July and will continue for the coming months until all Vizio TVs sporting the SmartCast 3.0 smart system have been updated. This means that compatibility goes back to some 2016 models, which is great news for owners with older TVs.
Once updated, AirPlay 2 will allow owners to stream content such as videos, photos and music straight to their TV from their libraries stored on iPhones, iPad and Macs. Moreover, AirPlay 2 supports the streaming of 4K and Dolby Vision HDR movies and TVs shows from the Apple TV app and multi-room capability means that music podcasts or audiobooks can be streamed to any AirPlay 2 compatible speaker in the home.
HomeKit enables control of a variety of home based smart devices via the Home app or using voice commands to Siri. Simple verbal instructions can power the TV on or off, adjust volume and switch inputs and by using scenes and automation a sequence of events such as turning on the TV, dimming the lights and closing the curtains can be initiated with a single command such as ‘Movie Night’.
Now that Vizio is on board with HomeKit support, it makes LG’s recent claim as the first 2019 TV to support the protocol seem fairly short lived.
Full functionality requires Apple devices to be running iOS 12.3 or later, or macOS 10.14.5 or later.
Bill Baxter, Vizio’s chief technology officer, commented, “With both AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support, users can now share movies, TV shows, music and more from their favourite apps, including the Apple TV app, directly to SmartCast TVs, and enable TV controls through the Home app and Siri.”
With these updates, Vizio SmartCast 3.0 TVs now supports all three major digital voice assistants and Baxter stated, "This broad range of compatibility enables VIZIO SmartCast to seamlessly integrate into any household with Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa – giving users more ways to sit back and enjoy the entertainment they love"
