  • Soundbars are a great way of squeezing a movie theatre like sound out of a relatively small and convenient tube and there are now an increasing number of top quality soundbars that support 3D object based immersive sound reproduction. However, these tend to be at the higher end of affordability. Vizio now releases a Dolby Atmos enabled 5.1.2 soundbar in the UK for £600, meaning a cinematic audio experience just took a price tumble.
Vizio claims to be the number 1 soundbar brand in the US and has now added to their growing brand portfolio in the UK by releasing their 36-inch 5.1.2 Soundbar system with Dolby Atmos. It brings eight channels of audio, including 2 upward firing speakers located in the bar itself, to provide the Dolby Atmos-enabled height channels.

Part of a range of soundbar models to provide choice for different listening environments, the 36-inch 5.1.2 Soundbar system features the standard left and right channels plus a central dialogue speaker to create the front soundstage. Two satellite speakers are provided for the rear surround channels and the low frequencies are supplied by the included wireless subwoofer.

Installation is a simple plug and play approach, eschewing the need for separate AV Receivers and speakers along with their with multiple trailing cables. The soundbar’s slim aesthetic is suitable for a variety of TV sizes and remains discrete within the listening environment.

Once up and running, users can take advantage of the built-in Chromecast feature which will enable streaming of music from any Chromecast supporting app.

Control of the 5.1.2 Soundbar system comes courtesy of the free Vizio SmartCast Mobile app or the included remote control which sports an LCD screen to aid interactivity. Additionally, the soundbar also features Google Assistant, meaning it can be controlled by vocal commands which can also extend to interacting with other Google Home smart devices.
Recent affordable soundbars, such as the Polk Command Bar, are increasingly coming with a wireless subwoofer and Alexa or Google Assistant support but the addition of rear surrounds and upward firing speakers at this level looks to be good value for money, especially with Google Assistant and in-built Chromecast support.

The Vizio 36-inch Soundbar system with Dolby Atmos is available from June 25th for £599.99 from or Exertis distribution.

If you're looking for a Dolby Atmos equipped soundbar, is this now on your wish list? Would the convenience and price make you reconsider moving to a soundbar from a more expensive AV Receiver and speaker set up? Let us know in the discussion thread.
