As a world renowned audio and video certification company, THX is well versed in licensing out its expertise and technologies, now the THX Onyx is launched as the company’s first consumer electronics device.
Using the firm’s own advanced THX AAA (Achromatic Audio Amplifier), an ESS ES9281PRO DAC and MQA support, the THX Onyx is a portable DAC/Amplifier solution for an expanding market that values the audio benefits of wired headphones on the go.
Jason Fiber, chief operating officer, THX Ltd, commented, “THX was founded on the principle that quality matters. We’ve remained dedicated for more than 35 years to innovation that ensures whatever an artist creates can be enjoyed by the audience in the manner intended.” He further added, “Consumers looking for the best audio experience over wired headphones may have found the quality is compromised, so we’re stepping up with a flexible, high-quality, and affordable solution with the launch of our first consumer product, THX Onyx.”
Able to enhance the mobile music, gaming, movies and streaming experience, the THX Onyx connects seamlessly through the USB output port of any device to improve the audio quality when listening over wired headphones, headsets, earbuds, or from desktop speakers.
Moreover, the THX Onyx sports cross-platform compatibility for convenient, plug-and-play feeding of any power-hungry headphones with up to five times more output power than other portable USB DAC/Amps, yet still retraining ultra low distortion and maximum dynamic range, thanks to the implementation of THX AAA-78. This is the highest-powered mobile THX Achromatic Audio Amplifier configuration and imparts the same power as a desktop THX AAA DAC/Amp, but in a smaller package.
THX AAA’s patented technology achieves its high fidelity audio and low levels of noise and distortion by using a feed-forward error correction topology. This nulls conventional amplifier distortion mechanisms to reduce harmonic, intermodulation, and crossover distortion by up to 40dB. The result is a realistic and fatigue-free listening experience with maximum output power for greater dynamic range and sound pressure levels.
The THX Onyx also supports Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) files with an on board renderer which can decode the MQA files that are used to capture, authenticate and reproduce the original performance from the master recording in a file small enough for streaming. This means the THX Onyx can be used with Tidal’s library of millions of MQA tracks as well as other sources of MQA music.
Mike Jbara, chief executive officer, MQA, said, “THX Onyx is the perfect introduction to high performance audio for mainstream music fans who want the best listening experience on the move. Consumers know that the THX brand represents premium entertainment, and we are proud that MQA has been integrated into the first-ever THX consumer product.”
With design elements including smart magnetic cable management to keep headphone wires tangle-free and a quality all-metal CNC-machined body, the THX Onyx meets the same high standard as any rigorously tested THX Certified product.
THX Onyx is now available today at thx.com and razer.com in North America, Europe and APAC, with a US$199.99 / EUR €209.99 MSRP.
