Say what you like about Quentin Tarantino but the man knows his film history. The Hateful Eight is the garrulous cineaste's eighth film as director and the follow-up to his highly successful Django Unchained. Once again Tarantino is playing in the Western genre, so expect plenty of homages and hip references, along with an eclectic soundtrack. As you'd also expect from Tarantino, the film boasts an impressive cast of stars and character actors that includes Samuel L. Jackson (obviously), Kurt Russell, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, Channing Tatum, Bruce Dern and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Tarantino is a well-known supporter of shooting on actual film stock and with The Hateful Eight he goes one better, shooting on Ultra Panavision 70 - that means both 70mm film stock and anamorphic lenses for a whopping 2.75:1 aspect ratio! That's the same format that 1959's Ben Hur was shot in and The Hateful Eight marks the first film to be shot in Ultra Panavision 70 since Khartoum in 1966. Finding a cinema with 70mm projection capabilities won't be easy but it should make for one hell of a Blu-ray.
The Hateful Eight opens in the UK on the 8th of January 2016.
