The original Ted was one of the surprise hits of 2012 and once you'd got over the sight of a teddy bear with the voice of Peter Griffin there was a very funny film with a dirty mind, a potty mouth and a big heart.
Of course after taking $549 million at the box office, it gave Seth MacFarlane a blank cheque to make whatever he wanted and unfortunately he made A Million Ways to Die in the West. The relative failure of that film has sent the actor/writer/director back to his first hit in the hope of recapturing the magic and the box office.
Unfortunately this sounds a lot like what happened to The Inbetweeners, with an original film that got big laughs and big box office but also tied up its story neatly by the end. It didn't need a sequel but the huge popularity of the first film resulted in a follow-up that was unnecessary, unfunny and cynical.
The first trailer for Ted 2 looked like it was following the same path, with unfunny gross-out sequences and no Mila Kunis this time around. Instead the film has added big names like Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried from A Million Ways to Die in the West, along with Morgan Freeman. This latest trailer certainly gets some big laughs and the dynamic between Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane retains great comic timing but will it be too much of a good thing?
Ted 2 opens on the 10th of July 2015.
