Technics has taken the blueprint of its popular SL-1500C turntable, streamlined some areas but kept the core features and unveiled a new entry level Hi-Fi turntable to win over a new generation of fans - it's the SL-100C.
Vinyl fans across the globe will be familiar with certain iconic characteristics of Technics turntables such as the iron-coreless direct drive motor and high-precision S-shaped aluminium tonearm. These now find themselves included as part of the direct drive Technics SL-100C turntable, an affordable way to sample the award winning experience offered by its more established sibling, the SL-1500C.
That experience means smooth rotational stability courtesy of the sophisticated, iron-coreless direct drive motor with motor control as well as a meticulous tracking process free from external vibrations due to the solid two-layer chassis. Furthermore, the highly precise S-shaped aluminium tonearm is capable of pulling out the subtle music nuances from every vinyl disc and, once the end of an LP’s side has been reached, the automatic tonearm lift is activated, preventing unnecessary needle wear-out.
To deliver the cost saving required for an entry level model but with minimum audio compromise, the Technics SL-110C is fitted with an Audio-Technica VM95C cartridge and the phono stage has been removed. The VM95C, with its conical stylus for accurate tracking, offers a blend of value, sonic finesse and wide compatibility with the built-in phono MM (Moving Magnet) inputs found on many Hi-Fi amplifiers.
European Technics product manager Frank Balzuweit, commented, “The huge success of the SL-1500C, offering a fully featured package for the dedicated hi-fi enthusiast, with all the core Technics turntable technologies, has shown we have hit the mark within a popular and competitive turntable class.” Balzuweit added, “The demand for this high-quality ‘plug’n’play’ turntable – having exceeded our own expectations – is still undiminished even to this day. However, there is still a strong appetite from the market to deliver a similarly attractive package at an even more affordable price.”
The SL-1500C was launched in 2019 and was itself based on the qualities of the game changing 1200 series. However, the SL-1500C was ultimately designed to be a pure Hi-Fi oriented turntable and thus shed some of the more DJ friendly features of its forebear.
