Whilst some may find Hollywood's continuing inability to create anything original slightly worrying, the teaser trailer for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. at least looks like fun.
This film version of the classic 60s TV series has been directed by Guy Ritchie, who also co-wrote the screenplay with three other writers. However based on the trailer, Ritchie has stamped his usual frenetic style all over the film adaptation. Ritchie's career has been boosted by the success of the Sherlock Holmes movies and he now seems to be following a similar career path to his former producing partner Matthew Vaughan. In the same way that the latter director has tackled both the Cold War spy genre in X-Men: First Class and parodied the classic Bond movies with Kingsman: The Secret Service, so Ritchie appears to taking a similar approach.
Still who doesn't enjoy a Cold Spy thriller, especially if it's done in the style of the classic Bond movies but with a modern twist and ideally with a slightly more family friendly approach than Kingsman. Heading up the cast is Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) as Napoleon Solo - the part originally played by Robert Vaughan (who incidentally Mathew Vaughan claimed was his biological father). In the old David McCallum role of Illya Kuryakin is Armie Hammer (The Social Network), whilst filling out the cast is Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) and, in a rare treat these days, Hugh Grant.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. opens in the UK on the 14th of August.
