TCL joins brands such as LG, Klipsch, Bang & Olufsen, Pioneer and Microsoft Xbox, under the WiSA umbrella of companies looking to push ahead with wireless audio.
WiSA is the Wireless Speaker and Audio Association and was formed by the industry as a means of bringing together companies interested in creating interoperability standards utilized by leading brands and manufacturers.
Bringing together hardware and software compatibility, WiSA released their ‘WiSA Ready’ certification which is based around a specification that enables wireless delivery of 24-bit, 48kHz/96kHz digital audio.
TCL’s membership is significant as they follow LG Electronics who joined last year. With two huge players in the TV market on board, this is clearly a bold step in the direction of standardised wireless TV audio. The 'WiSA Ready' standard features support for up to 8 channels and include Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
The large number of speaker and audio companies involved in the development of the WiSA protocol looks to be a strong statement about compatibility which means that any TV with the ‘WiSA Ready’ certification can connect to any of the speaker packages that bear the same badge.
Although announced back in 2013, the ‘WiSA Ready’ standard has had to overcome challenges such as latency, high cost, and limited support for high-resolution audio formats. Now, however, with a claimed latency of under 5ms for 24-bit uncompressed audio in Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the whole process aims to be swift and simple with a low-cost USB device replacing an AV receiver in order to transmit the audio signals.
“Our newest members bring decades of audio experience and product development capabilities across a wide variety of product types, adding incredible versatility and scalability to our member roster,” said Tony Ostrom, president of WiSA. “Our recent explosive growth in members is a testament to the heightened marketplace demand of high-definition wireless audio."
The latest, updated standard was announced recently and covers TVs, games consoles and speakers. LG did announce its readiness to release its 2019 range of TVs as ‘WiSA Ready,’ but these models are now starting to appear and no mention of the feature has yet been made by LG.
Home movie fans may have to wait a little longer to see TV models bearing the ‘WiSA Ready’ moniker but hopefully, TV products will start to appear in the not too distant future.
