Recognising that, as far as classic stereo devices are concerned, the analogue world is becoming increasingly digital, Germany’s T+A have taken its PA 1000E integrated amplifier and coupled it with a DAC to get the best of both worlds. The result is the PA 1100E integrated amp which has a high resolution, low distortion 32 bit DAC to convert the signals from its digital inputs into an analogue signal.
The DAC is equipped with PLL (phase lock loop) clock resynchronisation to minimise jitter and external disturbances, and uses an FIR (finite impulse response) filter and T+A’s own Bezier oversampling which the company says ‘guarantees lifelike, unadulterated reconstruction of the analogue signal without digital artefacts.’ All the calculations for this digital signal processing take place using highly accurate floating point arithmetic on a high performance DSP unit.
The extra digital inputs that have been added to the PA 1100E are mounted on a Digital Connecting Board and consist of four high-quality SP/DIF inputs, a USB input and an aptX Bluetooth module for wireless connectivity. The SP/DIF inputs (coax at 192kHz and optical at 96kHz) can be used to give external digital sources access to the DAC so they can exploit the signal processing for high quality audio too.
The USB input is intended to connect PC’s, laptops etc and it is able to process data rates up to 32-bit / 384 kHz for PCM and DSD 256 (12 MHz).
Additional I/O is available with an HDMI module that comes with 2 HDMI inputs and an ARC compatible HDMI output to enable TVs, Blu-ray players and games consoles to be connected to the PA 1100E. And vinyl fans are not left out either as an optional phono module is available too.
The development team concentrated on making sure the preamplifier section performed with absolute neutrality, improved musical fidelity and outstanding dynamic characteristics so that the sonic fingerprint of the PA 1100E was exactly as intended. For listeners wanting to bypass the tone controls and Loudness function, a ‘Flat’ switch is included to get back to amp’s pure sound. Pairing with a modern power amplifier shows off the lively sound and contoured bass range inherent in the PA 1100E’s design.
The T+A PA 1100 E is available now, with an SRP of £3,660. The optional HDMI card is £390.
