Starzplay video streaming app launched in UK

US premium cable and satellite television network Starz has launched its streaming app, Starzplay, in 5 countries, with 20 more planned.

Lionsgate owned Starz has announced the launch of its direct to consumer streaming app in Brazil, France, Germany, Mexico and the U.K, with a rollout to a further 20 territories planned in 2020.

The American based television network has more than 5.6 million US based over-the-top video subscribers and Starzplay is a separate SVOD service for its consumers.

International customers can currently access Starzplay in Europe and Latin America via a mix of Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Orange and Vodafone among others, so the standalone app will create a more unified viewing experience and customers subscribing through those platforms will be able to authenticate their accounts and watch directly through the new app.

Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch said in a statement, “Expanding our direct-to-consumer product into the global arena gives subscribers seamless entry to our platform and premium content on their device of choice, while also providing us with access to key consumer data insights as we continue to position ourselves for success in the evolving content ecosystem.”

Subscribers in select countries have access to hundreds of movies and series, including Starz Originals such as the recently debuted The Spanish Princess and Dublin Murders. Recent high profile acquisitions include Batman prequel Pennyworth and DC Universe and HBO Max series Doom Patrol. There are also movies such as Hitch, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and No Country for Old Men.

The app is already available in the US and new customers in the 5 new territories can either sign through the local partner platforms or directly through the Starzplay app for approximately $5 per month, depending upon market location.

The Starzplay app allows up to four users to watch simultaneously and enjoy offline downloads of select content. Users can enjoy personalised recommendations of shows and movies based on their previous viewing interests and select their preferred language for audio or captions. The premium pay-TV streaming service is available through iPhone, iPad, as well as on a wide range of Android supported devices.

Hirsch went on to say, “Starz has experienced great success with the Starz app domestically, remaining ahead of the streaming curve with more than 5.6 million OTT customers to date, and that number continues to climb.
