There have been rumours circulating for weeks that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be released on Blu-ray in April. Thanks to a slightly premature Duracell advert, the actual release date in the UK was leaked and has since been officially announced by Disney/Lucasfilm as Monday the 18th of April. The studio has also confirmed specifications and extras, so we get a 1080p/24 image and DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 audio but sadly no immersive audio. Here in the UK we will have the choice of a 'Lightside' or 'Darkside' cover, along with a steelbook but no mention of either a 3D Blu-ray or an Ultra HD Blu-ray release.
In terms of the extras we get:
Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey - A feature length documentary
The Story Awakens: The Table Read
Blueprint of a Battle: The Snow Fight
The Visual Magic of the Force
John Williams: The Seventh Symphony
Force for Change Promo
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has shattered box office records since it was released back in December, beating Avatar in the US where it made of over $900 million, and becoming the third film after Titanic and Avatar to make more than $2 billion world wide. So it's a fair bet that the Blu-ray release will also be breaking records when it comes out but seriously Disney/Lucasfilm, what about a 3D and an Ultra HD Blu-ray announcement?
In terms of other Star Wars related movies we have Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opening on the 16th of December this year and Star Wars Episode VIII began shooting last month with a planned release date of the 15th of December 2017.
