Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi title announced
Lucasfilm has announced the full title of the next instalment of the Star Wars saga and it's Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.Rogue One: A Star Wars Story only passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office last weekend but already the Lucasfilm marketing engine is gearing up for the next Star Wars release. The new title is clearly referring to Luke Skywalker and the ending of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens but since the plural of Jedi is also Jedi, it's a safe bet that Rey will ultimately factor into the list of remaining Jedi as well. Nothing is known about the plot of Episode VIII, aside from the fact that it picks up right where Episode VII left off.
The latest Star Wars film is being written and directed by Rian Johnson, who also made Looper, is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, and executive produced by J. J. Abrams. The new instalment in the saga finished principal photography last year includes the principal cast from The Force Awakens – Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleson, Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong'o and Anthony Daniels, along with Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher. Joining them for The Last Jedi are Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern, although their exact roles are currently a closely guarded secret.
Since the 25th of May is the fortieth anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars, it's reasonable to assume we can expect to see the first trailer for Episode VIII around that time.
Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi opens on the 15th of December 2017.
