Sonus faber unveils Lumina speaker collection

Lumina luxury

by Andy Bassett

Sonus faber, the renowned Italian luxury speaker manufacturer has launched the Lumina range of speakers - the Lumina I standmount, Lumina III floorstander and Lumina Center I.

With the aim of making a Sonus faber speaker setup available for everyone, the Lumina range is flexible across a wide range of AV applications including music, movies and games and brings a luxury sound experience, minimalist design and natural sound reproduction within the reach of more pockets.

The driver technology employed across the range includes Sonus faber’s iconic D.A.D. (Damped Apex Dome) tweeter. This is the same tweeter as used in the company’s Sonetto series which reduces the anti-phase behaviour responsible for high frequency early roll-off. Here, it features a Kurtmueller hand-coated soft-silk 29mm diaphragm.

Mid range drivers are split between existing and new technology specifically designed for the Lumina series. The 100mm (4-inch) mid range driver consists of a custom-made basket and a cellulose pulp diaphragm that has been blended with other natural fibres. Meanwhile, the 125mm (5-inch) midrange unit sees the Sonetto series driver which features Sonus faber’s proprietary natural fibre and paper blend air-dried diaphragm.

The low end frequency drivers have been designed from the ground up for the Lumina series and also feature a paper pulp cone to ensure coherence with the rest of the drivers and delivery of the Sonus faber tonality.

Versatility of placement is secured by the frontside reflex ports on the Lumina I standmount and Center I centre channel speakers plus on the underside of the floorstanding Lumina III.

The Luminas are also provided with two pairs of nickel-plated terminals, allowing for bi-wiring and bi-amping and the crossovers feature specially designed Sonus faber-branded high-quality capacitors.

While the choice of speakers means it’s straight forward to select a pair suitable for two channel stereo listening, the option of the centre channel speaker means that a home cinema setup is an easy step to take too. This is aided and abetted by complementing the Lumina range with one of Sonus faber’s five strong Gravis series of subwoofers which can be used to augment low frequencies and provide a full 5.1 surround sound configuration.

The design and materials used in the Lumina range reflect the minimalist ‘less is more’ approach yet still maintains a luxurious aesthetic. The cabinets themselves are perfectly squared and research has ensured the volumes provide accurate sound performance as well as overall compact dimensions for set up.

The handcrafted finish uses real multilayer wood on the front baffle which is available in premium finishes including Walnut and Wengè (both in matte finish with maple inlays), with a third option of Piano Black. All the other surfaces of the cabinet are hand-covered in the company’s recognisable black leather. Finally, the front baffle is set off by the chrome rings around the drivers that highlights their shapes and proportions.

The Lumina collection is available globally now. Sonus faber is distributed in the UK by Fine Sounds UK and orders are being accepted now, with stock arriving on September the 28th.

Lumina I £799
Lumina III floorstander £1,999
