Sonos Ready To Reveal a New Speaker For CES 2019?

Another Sonos speaker to ‘Play’ with?

  • Sonos take their sweet time releasing new products but they are generally well worth the wait.
Eagle-eyed enthusiasts have spotted a listing related to Sonos on the FCC website and this is normally indicative of a product being readied for release. All electronic products manufactured or sold in the United States have to certify that the electromagnetic interference from the device is under limits approved by the Federal Communications Commission, thus an FCC entry is a good marker of some upcoming activity - possibly at CES next week.

The product in question (referred to as S18 in the FCC listing) looks to be a satellite speaker that pairs with Sonos’ existing Playbar to improve the immersive experience. The Playbar is referred to a ’Master device’ in the filing which rather hints that the S18 is designed as an addon. However, with the available range of Sonos speakers already able to connect to each other in one way or another perhaps the new satellite brings something new to the party (7.1 surround sound, Dolby Atmos or DTS:X support?).

It features wireless connectivity of course but the Bluetooth functionality means that the speaker may well be able to be used independently of the Playbar and connect to other, non-Sonos devices. There’s likely to be touch controls, multi-room functionality and voice activation in line with Sonos’ other products too.

The multi-room interconnected market has exploded recently with a multitude of impressive products (such as Yamaha’s MusicCast range) all directly competing with Sonos, so the price point of the S18 will prove very interesting. We’ll be keeping an ear open.
