Sharp joins DTS Play-Fi audio ecosystem

DTS Play-Fi gets Sharp edge

by Andy Bassett
UMC - Universal Media Corporation - which has an exclusive brand licence for Sharp’s European TV and audio businesses, will develop Sharp branded speakers and soundbars incorporating the DTS Play-Fi wireless audio standard.
Created in 2012, the DTS Play-Fi technology enables lossless multi-room wireless audio streaming on any supported product. By removing the limitations imposed by using a wireless network tied to just one manufacturer’s products, DTS Play-Fi opens up the possibilities afforded by an ecosystem featuring the largest collection of products in the whole-home wireless audio space, with more than 200 interoperable speakers, soundbars, set-top boxes, and A/V receivers from the top names in premium audio including Anthem, Audiolab, Definitive Technology, Integra, Klipsch, McIntosh, Mission, Paradigm, Pioneer, Polk Audio, Quad, and Rotel.

Xperi, DTS Play-Fi’s parent company has been busy gathering new recruits recently, including Philips TVs and audio and adding Sharp to this stable of expanding brands and products allows flexibility in setting up advance streaming functionality for surround sound, perfectly synced multi-room TV audio, iOS and Android app-based headphone streaming, and compatibility with Hi-Res music services.

There’s support from the world's most popular music services including Amazon Music, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Napster, Pandora, Qobuz, SiriusXM, Spotify and TIDAL plus thousands of Internet radio stations, as well as personal music libraries.

Dannie Lau, General Manager DTS Play-Fi, said, “We are excited to work with UMC to bring DTS Play-Fi enabled Sharp sound bars and speakers to the European market." He added, "Our wireless technology gives consumers the freedom to create multi-room audio and surround systems that work seamlessly together and without limitations. We expect this level of seamless connectivity to rapidly transform the smart home, with DTS Play-Fi leading the way.”

UMC will be unveiling a 5.1.2 immersive sound bar featuring DTS Play-Fi at IFA 2019 this week, presumably under the Sharp brand, so there’ll be a chance to see how well DTS Play-Fi has been integrated.
