Sennheiser unveils IE 600 earphones
SRP: £699.00

Sennheiser has unveiled its latest set of earphones, with the IE 600 boasting ultra-tough housings to ensure a perfectly natural sound.

It’s not often that our attention if first drawn to the materials as a headline feature in a new pair of earphones, but if ZR01 amorphous zirconium didn’t mean anything to you before, it probably should now. Apparently – and we’re trusting Sennheiser on this – it’s a metal that has a “glass-like atomic structure that gives it triple the hardness and bend resistance of high-performance steel.” It’s something more commonly found in aerospace (it's found in the drilling head of NASA’s Mars Rover), so to find it in a set of earphones has certainly caught our interest.

It’s different to the likes of last year’s impressive IE 900 buds that use a more traditional aluminium design, and should provide an incredibly tough-yet-flexible housing that’ll not only shrug off your usual knocks and scratches, but also help to deliver an accomplished acoustic performance. This is bolstered by the likes of dual resonator chambers in the nozzle and an acoustic back volume to keep the audio clean plus eliminate masking resonances that might otherwise impact on those higher frequencies.

The IE 600 also comes with Sennheiser’s own TrueResponse transducer, a single 7mm driver that supports the extra-wide frequency range and further minimises distortion. The intended result is an earphone that offers a “tonally neutral, intimate and emotional sound”. They also support cable diameters of up to 4.8mm – with 3.5mm and 4.4mm included with the model, plus a choice of two earbud tips (silicone and memory foam) in three different sizes so you can find your most comfortable fit.
