Upcoming corporate changes notwithstanding, it’s business as usual for Sennheiser as the company unveils its new audiophile friendly IE 900 earphones.
Drawing back the curtain on its latest, top of the range earphones, Sennheiser’s IE 900 wired headset is designed to bring together technical innovation, portability and attention to detail to take advantage of a market moving towards Hi-Res audio and 5G streaming, so says the company.
Coming in above the IE 800 S and using patented absorber technology that was originally developed for this incumbent model, the new IE 900 sports Sennheiser’s proprietary X3R transducer along with engineering to achieve the desired acoustic tuning and to reduce resonances and masking effects.
This new X3R transducer is a refined version of the audio specialist’s 7mm audiophile Extra Wide Band transducer given tighter tolerances and tuning for greater fidelity. These broadband transducers are light and pliable and the newly created membrane foil provides a high degree of inner dampening.
The housings for the IE 900 are milled from a single piece of aluminium and contain an updated version of the company’s unique triple-chamber absorber (T3CA) system. Three chambers and an acoustic vortex are created within each housing to counter the masking effect. This acoustic phenomenon sees high frequency sounds at low volume masked if louder sounds in a lower frequency range occur at the same time. The absorber system reduces this by removing energy from the masking frequencies.
The result is balanced sound, reduced distortion and audio transparency, regardless of listening volume.
The precision engineering process for the IE 900 takes place at Sennheiser’s German facility in Wedemark and involves checking the transducers with cameras and testing before and after pairing. The assembled left and right-side earphones are then paired by hand for optimal performance.
Ergonomically designed for comfort and a secure fit, the earphones come with individually adjustable ear hooks as well as silicone and memory foam ear adaptors in three sizes.
Fitted with a high-performance Fidelity Plus MMCX connector for an audiophile option, the IE 900 earphones come with an unbalanced cable with a 3.5mm connector plus balanced cables with 2.5mm and 4.4mm connectors.
Jermo Köhnke, Product Manager at Sennheiser, explained, “No detail is too small when you’re striving to set a new benchmark in portable audio fidelity. We designed every component of the IE 900 to work together to deliver extraordinary audio performance.” He added, “Whether in long listening sessions at home or on the go, listeners will never have to compromise on their music experience.”
The Sennheiser IE 900 will cost £1,099/ €1,299 with availability from June.
