Korean press says Samsung is going back to OLED to compete with the iPad Air
Samsung has used an OLED display in a tablet before but it seems like they are more serious this time.According to a report in the Korean media, at the behest of Samsung mobile, the display division is currently working on new 8 and 10-inch AMOLED displays with the intent of going in to mass production early in 2014. Clearly these will be fitted in to premium tablet products with the obvious target being Apple's highly acclaimed iPad Air.
The report makes no mention of screen resolution so it will be very interesting to see if they can produce something that can compete on the pixel count in an OLED screen so small.
Will they be able to compete on the pixel count?
Samsung will still produce lower end tablets with LCD displays but from the sketchy Google Translate, Samsung's engineers are conscious about getting the weight down somewhere close to - or even below - the iPad Air's 469g mass.
The report goes on to say that at least one of these new premium products will launch alongside the flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone, which is expected sometime in the first quarter of 2014.
