Samsung's The Wall Luxe Micro LED TV available at Harrods

Has Samsung swapped the term Micro LED for modular LED?

by Andy Bassett
Samsung’s multi-experience store, which showcases its latest developments across a range of technologies, has taken up residence at the world famous home of luxury and designer goods - Harrods. While the likes of the 8K QLED Q950R TV and the newly released Galaxy Note 10+ 5G mobile phone will be of interest, the most eye-catching product will be Samsung’s eagerly anticipated Micro LED TV, dubbed The Wall Luxe.
Micro LED technology in TVs has been waiting in the wings for a few years now while the manufacturing process was refined and has been shown off at trade shows such as CES and was recently officially launched at Infocomm 2019.

This is the first time it has been announced as available to order in the UK and Harrods is the exclusive retail partner. Interestingly, Samsung has dropped any mention of the term 'Micro LED' in its press release, instead preferring to refer to the TV as ‘The Wall Luxe’ and the technology behind it as ‘modular LED’, possibly to avoid foisting another technological TV term on the public after LED, OLED and QLED.

Comprised of modular panels, displays can be customised to fit most sizes and shapes of room. Panels have previously been shown at sizes of 75-inches, 146-inches, 219-inches and at a gigantic 292-inches with a resolution of 8K. Screen ratios can be adjusted beyond 16:9, so a 21:9 option is entirely possible and the panels are bezel-less so they disappear into the overall display.

As well as scalability, MicroLED also provides benefits in picture quality. Since it uses emissive microscopic LEDs to produce the red, blue and green colours, it mirrors OLED’s self-emitting properties and matches its impressive contrast and black levels but, unlike OLED, it isn't limited in terms of its peak brightness and colour gamut, nor will it suffer from image retention.

The process used to produce the LEDs means the individual pixels are only 0.8mm wide, meaning even more pixels can be used in every frame for a higher-quality image. The Wall Luxe also uses HDR and supports HDR10+ dynamic metadata. Combined with precise greyscale to enhance contrast, Samsung claims a ‘crystal-clear picture in any light’.

The Wall Luxe is powered by the Quantum Processor, which uses AI upscaling technology to maximise the image quality, regardless of source format, so movies, TV boxsets and games will always appear at their best as the picture engine delivers intuitive resolution-to-screen size adjustment.

Samsung
Samsung follows its more consumer oriented 2019 QLED models by providing an Ambient Mode for The Wall Luxe. This uses a low power mode to enable the panel to act as a digital canvas and display images when not in use. Therefore, photographs or images of works of art can be displayed and, combined with the Wall Luxe’s Infinity Design and Décor Frame, give the effect of a masterpiece in the room.

Damon Crowhurst, Head of Visual Display at Samsung UK, commented, “As the world’s first consumer modular LED screen solution, The Wall Luxe delivers the ultimate flexibility for people wanting to customise their homes with bespoke display solutions – delivering on design without compromising on top of the range technology.”

He continued, “With Samsung’s The Wall Luxe, we provide infinite screen size and shape possibilities which reimagine the total viewing experience. We’re thrilled to be the first to offer this solution with Harrods as our retail partner.”

Aimed at luxury residences, The Wall Luxe is available to order in-store at Harrods and the customer will be advised of the price based on the custom build and installation.

So, it’s a case of, ‘if you have to ask, you can’t afford it’. Any secret millionaire, mansion owning AVForums members fancy popping down to Harrods to get one and let the rest of us know what The Wall Luxe experience is like?
