  • Samsung have announced their new Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones and they have as many features as you could pack into a mobile device.
The new phones have what Samsung call an Infinity Display, that is it's the biggest most immersive screen the company have ever produced with no bezel. The screen spills over the sides of the handset to create a completely smooth and continuous surface that flows into the aluminium shell. The new phones come in a number of colours including Midnight Black, Orchid Grey, Coral Blue, Arctic Silver and Maple Gold. The S8 measures 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0mm and weighs 155g, whilst the S8+ measures 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1mm and weighs 173g.

The S8 uses a 5.8" Quad HD+ Super AMOLED (2960 x 1440) screen with 570 ppi and the S8+ also uses a 6.2" Quad HD+ Super AMOLED (2960 x 1440) screen with 529 ppi. The screens also support High Dynamic Range (HDR10). The phones have a dual pixel 12MP AF camera at the rear and an 8MP AF camera at the front. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ can record video at 4K/30fps and slow motion at 720p/240fps. The phones use the new 10nm processor with, according to Samsung, a 10% more powerful CPU and a 21% more capable GPU. The phones use Android 7.0 (Nougat) and support 32-bit PCM and DSD64/128 playback, along with AKG earphones which should please audiophiles.

The new phones are IP68-rates water and dust resistant, include a hybrid SIM and can be charged either wirelessly or via USB Type-C. There's a host of security features including iris scan, facial recognition, fingerprint, pattern, password and PIN, along with defence-grade encryption. Artificial intelligence and personal assistants are all the rage and Samsung has theirs in the form of Bixby but in adding a virtual assistant they have also dropped the home button. Of course you can also use your Galaxy S8 or S8+ with the Gear 360 and Gear VR, as well as Samsung Health, Samsung Pay and Samsung Connect.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is priced at £690 and the Galaxy S8+ is priced at £780, with both phones being released on the 21st of April.
