Roon with a view

Since their introduction back in 2018, the Nucleus and Nucleus+ dedicated servers from Roonlabs have provided a premium alternative to running your Roon setup on a 10 year old, underpowered laptop that you happened to have lying around. Having had a makeover, the Generation 2 iterations are now available in the UK.

Previously only available in the US, the Nucleus and Nucleus+ servers provide dedicated, powerful, plug-and-play access to your Roon music management software and circumvent potential issues if using an underpowered or multitasking family computer.

Based on Intel Core i3 and i7 processors (Nucleus and Nucleus+ respectively), the latest revisions maintain their technical specifications, including a custom OS built specifically for Roon, but benefit from a facelift, new production facilities and some revised features.

The move to a Californian production site has enabled a reshaping of the chassis allowing a change in the internal layout to accommodate SATA drives up to 15mm deep rather than the previous limitation of SATA drives of 9mm deep. There’s now a second HDMI output on the back panel too, and the previous iteration’s passive (and therefore quiet) cooling is retained.

Roon itself is a platform for managing all aspects of your music collection, from browsing to collating photos, biogs, lyrics tour dates and more. These are all located by the Roon software and interconnected to build a searchable digital magazine for your music collection. Roon can search out music on all your hard drives, network storage and streaming services (such as TODAL or Qobuz) and allow you to play it on a wide variety of audio devices around the home, all controllable via the remote apps available for iOS, Android, macOS and Windows.

Roon can expand into a multi-room, multi-user platform capable of bit-perfect playback, DSD and PCM upsampling as well as multi-channel playback and signal path display. This provides the core to a high performance audio experience for both home and custom installations.
