PSB Speakers unveils Passif 50 loudspeaker

PSB gets Passif progressive…

by Ian Collen
MSRP: £2,499.00

PSB Speakers has announced the latest addition to its distinguished audio line-up, with the Passif 50 celebrating half a century of high-fidelity speakers and the company’s signature ‘True to Nature’ sound.

The new stand-mounted loudspeaker takes its name from the company’s ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations, with the Passif 50 serving as a homage to one of its first speakers – the Passif II that was first heard way back in 1974, two years after the company was founded – while also continuing its legacy. According to PSB Speakers, this is “marked by tonal accuracy, spatial realism, and freedom from distortion”.

The Passif 50 echoes some of those 1970’s design elements, with an open-grained walnut veneer cabinet. The effect is amplified with the original (now retro) PSB logo, while the speakers also come with a celebratory ‘Passif 50 – 1972-2022’ plaque on the rear.

However, inside the cabinet it’s a much more modern affair, with a 1-inch titanium dome tweeter that uses a neodymium magnet and ferrofluid damping that PSB says will deliver “higher output, improved power handling, and reduced distortion”. This is bolstered by a phase plug in front of the dome that helps to direct the tweeter’s output in a wide and consistent dispersion for a deeper soundstage.

The 6.5-inch woofer and 8-inch passive radiator come with cast aluminium baskets to resist flexing, while the filleted rubber surrounds help to dampen the cone resonances for a smoother response and cleaner sound. The Passif 50 also features dual five-way binding posts and the speakers can be bi-wired or bi-amped.

The PSB Speakers Passif 50 will start shipping in September, with pre-orders available from the beginning of August, priced at £2,499 (€2,999 / $2,499). The first 500 orders will also receive a handwritten letter from company founder Paul Barton, along with a QR code to collect a bonus gift pack. You can find out more on the PSB website – but will these extras, along with the nostalgic value of the company’s illustrious heritage and the Passif 50's updated technology, be enough to tempt you into this not insignificant price tag?
