Pro-Ject Audio launches X2 B turntable

X2 B or not to be?

by Ian Collen

Pro-Ject Audio has announced the arrival of the new X2 B, its first turntable to come with a fully balanced mini XLR output for seamless integration with the company’s True Balanced Connection product range.

The original True Balanced Connection line-up was launched back in April. Along with the Phono Box DS3 B and S3 B, the concept collection was headlined by the high-end X8 turntable which came with a hefty £2,099 price tag. At £1,399, the X2 B is a modified version of the original X2 that launched a few years ago, and while it may be seen as a trimmed-down and more affordable alternative – though it’s still a far cry from Pro-Ject’s cheaper turntables, such as the E1 announced in May that starts from £269 – there’s still plenty of the company’s finest tech on display.

The Pro-Ject Audio X2 B's main USP is the fully balanced mini XLR output to hook up to other True Balanced Connection models.

With the fully balanced mini XLR output, the X2 B is designed to work in perfect harmony with the aforementioned phono stages, and comes equipped with a built-in Ortofon Quintet Red MC cartridge to support its True Balanced status. By adding an extra wire to this connection, Pro-Ject’s balanced system aims to eliminate noise and interference, and with the X2 B it’s continuing to expand its availability beyond the highest of the high-end or bespoke analogue solutions.

Very much like the original X2, the X2 B uses a 9-inch carbon/aluminium tonearm to offer rigidity and damping, with a low-friction 4-pin point bearing for a smooth and accurate tracking. It also has a TPE damped counterweight to reduce arm-cartridge resonances “by as much as 50%”, and comes with adjustable azimuth and vertical tracking angle (VTA). The turntable uses a non-resonant 30mm Acryl platter via a sub-platter drive system with low bearing tolerances for a “liquid smooth” rotation.

Pro-Ject says it has designed a motor and suspension to run in sync and remain stable, with vibrations “damped and eliminated so they are not transmitted onto the chassis, platter and cartridge”, and comes suspended on a precision-tuned TPE belt. The X2 B is mounted on a heavy 50mm CNC machined MDF chassis to further reduce resonances (“to almost imperceptible levels”), with height-adjustable damped aluminium feet.

The Pro-Ject X2 B turntable is available now, priced at £1,399 and with a black or white satin finish, a black 8-layer high-gloss paint option, or a wooden walnut veneer. Pro-Ject does note that it is shipping “in limited quantities” at the moment, but with more stock landing during the rest of August. You can check all the details on the Pro-Ject website (the X2 B wasn’t listed at the time of writing, but the original X2 has much the same specs), along with its list of regional dealers. It will be interesting to see (or hear?) if that True Balanced Connection make a notable difference and justify the extra expense...
