Primare unveils NP5 Prisma MK2 network player for August

Back up plan

Primare is launching the NP5 Prisma MK2 later in the summer in response to supply chain issues for its NP5 Prisma network player, ensuring continued stocks of its popular streaming device.

Updated 15-Jun-2021: Details of NP5 update programme added at end of item.

As if the AV industry wasn’t facing enough problems getting its products out to eager enthusiasts around the world, what with Covid travel and transportation restrictions in place to varying (and often quickly changing) degrees globally, late last year a major fire at the AKM semiconductor factory in Nobeoka, Japan significantly affected many supply chains leading into the AV sector.

For Swedish Hi-Fi firm Primare, this event created long term disruption to the supply of a critical re-clocking chip at the heart of the NP5 Prisma design that allowed for the selection of output sampling frequencies.

The company’s response to this interruption in supplies was to source a more readily available chip and redesign the circuit to maintain the performance of the original NP5 Prisma. Moreover, Primare has taken the opportunity to add an MQA passthrough feature not possible with the original chip.

Prospective consumers will be glad to hear that all other features, functionality and control parameters remain the same from the original model, which was launched in November 2019, including AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, Chromecast built-in and Roon Ready status. In addition, Spotify HiFi and Tidal Connect are expected to join this extensive list later in the summer.
