Philips has introduced two new 4K LED TV models for 2021, the 9206 plus ‘The One’ Performance Series 8506 model.
Away from the launch of the more obviously eye catching OLED806, 856 and 706 plus brand new mini-LED 9636 and 9506 models, Philips has also introduced two LED models for TV viewers who want the latest features but are happy to do without display technologies that tend to attract a price premium even in the mid range bracket.
Step forward the Philips 9206 and 8506 Performance Series DLED models which take many of the attributes from their higher-end related model groups but shed a few of the more premium features enabling a high quality audio and visual experience albeit at a (presumably, otherwise what's the point?) more affordable price.
The 9206 has a high quality 100Hz VA panel with a wide viewing angle and uses a Direct dimmable LED backlight (hence DLED) with the Philips Micro Dimming Pro system to deliver its contrast. It comes in 55- and 65-inch screen sizes.
Meanwhile, there’s a much wider selection of screen sizes for the 8506 series including 43-, 50-, 58-, 65-, 70- and 75-inch options, which all use Philips Micro Dimming for their contrast. The two largest sizes feature light-silver metal trapezoid feet, while the 43 - 65 inch models sport a light-silver, slim-line metal T-bar swivel stand.
Design-wise, the 8506 maintains the light silver look for its narrow brushed aluminium bezel while the 9206 moves to a mid silver finish for its lower bezel and minimalist top and sides, along with a dual tone look for its ‘sticks’ feet. Both TVs feature Philips’s immersive Ambilight system in the form of a 4-sided arrangement for the 9206 and 3-sided for the 8506.
Both TV series feature the P5 processor which leverages the Perfect Picture Engine for improved image quality, and support for HDR10 / HLG / HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR features across the board.
Full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 capability (48Gbps, 4:4:4, 12 bit) is present in the 9206 across two (ports 1 and 2) bringing Variable Refresh rate (VRR) for 4K from 40Hz to 120Hz, Auto-Low-Latency Mode (ALLM - already available on a selection of Philips 2020 models) and eARC (port 2 only). Additionally gamers will benefit from the [email protected] refresh rate, FreeSync Premium Pro and Auto Game mode.
This makes the 9206 a more suitable gaming TV since the 8506 drops the 48Gbps bandwidth and only features the VRR, ALLM and eARC capabilities along with a [email protected] refresh rate.
Audio systems differ between the two sets of models too with a high quality 50W 2.1 sound system with rear mounted woofer and four passive radiators pumping out sound on the 9206 with a more sedate 20W setup for the 8506.
DTS Play-Fi is available for wireless connectivity and easy playback of high-resolution audio across multiple compatible devices for multi-room sound.
The latest Android 10 TV OS offers a new intuitive interface and access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+, while both Google Assistant Built-in and Works with Alexa compatibility provide the Smart features owners will be expecting.
Both the 9206 and 8506 TVs will be available from Q2 2021 with prices to be confirmed.
