  • OLED is the focus of Philips's TV line-up for 2018, with the manufacturer adding three new models this year, all of which will offer the same picture quality.
First up is the 873 which, despite the different serial number, is identical to last year's 55POS9002 but uses a 65" screen size instead. The 873 combines the P5 picture processing engine and the three-sided Ambilight system, together with the pure black levels of OLED. The combination of the 873’s 900nits peak-light performance, wide colour gamut and the P5 picture processing engine allows the set to easily reach and even surpass the standard for UHD Premium certification and Philips’ own exacting HDR Perfect standard - for HDR10, HDR10+ and Hybrid Log-Gamma content. Sound quality is equally impressive thanks to the inclusion of Philips patented and powerful triple ring technology and DTS HD Premium Sound compatibility.

The 873 uses a brushed aluminium open frame and a ‘Cradle’ central stand that creates a floating look. The razor thin chassis and the extremely tight dimensions and fit of the OLED panel, within the super thin narrow bezel, are also attractive design points. The 873 is powered by the Android M Smart TV system and is certified by Google, giving access to all TV orientated apps, services, and content in the Google Play Store. It also comes with two controllers, the first is the familiar dual-sided remote with a QWERTY keyboard and the second is a stripped down version that has been designed for simplified and voice control. The 65" 873 will be available in the UK in the first half of the year but price has yet to be confirmed.
Next up is the 973 which was first showcased at IFA last September. This new OLED TV only comes in a 65" screen size and includes a built-in soundbase for superior sound quality. The 973 is the flagship of the Philips TV range this year and fully reflects the company’s focus on outstanding European design and craftsmanship. The design uses natural materials throughout with a glass backed panel and metal construction.

There is also a 6.1 high-end 60W sound system within the stand which features six front firing drivers - mounted in the aluminum and Kvadrat speaker cloth covered integrated sound base. The sound base can be used either on a table top or wall mounted, in either case, the speaker cloth remains clearly visible and the sound base delivers the same superior sound quality. The 973 also includes the P5 picture processing engine and support for HDR10, HDR10+ and Hybrid Log-Gamma.

The 65” OLED 973 is powered by the Android M Smart TV system and is certified by Google, giving access to all TV orientated apps, services, and content in the Google Play Store while also complementing the existing Philips Smart TV offering. Effective operation and fast navigation is possible thanks to powerful Quad Core processing and the 973 also comes with the two controllers – a dual-sided remote and a simplified version. The 65" 973 will also be available in the UK in the first half of the year and again, price has yet to be confirmed.
Finally, later in the year Philips will release the 803 OLED TV in both 55" and 65" screen sizes. This new model combines 900nits of peak light output and the P5 processing engine, which allows the set to reach UHD Premium and Philips own HDR Perfect standard, along with support for HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. Powered by the Android M Smart TV system, the set features an ultra-fast quad core processor and 16GB of expandable onboard memory. It will also launch as Google Assistant Built-in ready with the potential for full spoken control of the TV and twin remote controls.

The 803 features a new minimalist design, with a super-narrow bezel in a brushed metallic finish that is complemented by two narrow, horizontal metal feet set at right angles to the screen. A razor thin chassis also allows a near seamless connection to the three-sided Ambilight technology and the sound quality matches the set’s overall performance thanks to the inclusion of Philips patented and powerful triple ring technology and DTS HD Premium Sound compatibility.
