Philips 800 Series OLED TVs come to UK in July

Latest 4th Gen P5 with AI processing promises higher level image quality

by Andy Bassett

Available in the UK from July, the new Philips OLED 805 / 855 / 865 TV sets will come in both 55- and 65-inch versions.

Having won plenty of praise for its picture quality over the past three years - including AVForums’ very own Editor’s Choice Award for Best TV Picture Processing 2019 for the 3rd Gen P5 processor - TP Vision will be looking to build upon that success with its latest Philips 800 Series OLED TVs which includes the 805, 855 and 865 models.

Differentiated mainly by stand design flourishes, all the models on offer in the 800 Series come with the latest 4th Gen processor, support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ flavours of dynamic metadata HDR and Philips’ proprietary Ambilight. They also all feature a multi-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system and support DTS Play-Fi surround sound & multiroom connectivity.

At the heart of Philips’ image processing philosophy is recognition of five factors which contribute towards the ultimate image - the so called five pillars of picture quality, source, colour, contrast, motion and sharpness. By using new Artificial Intelligence functionality, the new P5 processor creates a better balance between these elements rather than just simply boosting each one, thus producing a more natural image.

Philips continues its support for better overall HDR performance by including compatibility with both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision via disc, set-top box and multiple streaming services and uses a special Dolby Bright Mode to get the best out of DV encoded content.

The 800 Series also offers better contrast, more depth impression, better sharpness and a more realistic reproduction of reflections and skin tones to help transform SDR content into a true HDR-like picture through its unique Perfect Natural Reality technology.

A great picture is only part of the immersive experience and Philips has improved the audio capabilities of the 800 Series OLEDs too. All models feature Dolby Atmos decoding, the Dolby Atmos Virtualizer function and Dolby bass and dialogue enhancement. Additionally, the 50W sound system uses new mid-range drivers and upgraded tweeters in the front speakers for more detail, along with a new woofer design with the inclusion of four passive radiators for deeper bass.

The addition of DTS Play-Fi with its multi-room audio capability allows compatible speakers to connect to the television and serve as surround speakers, or as a multi-room extension of the TV audio. Philips claims it is the first premium TV brand to incorporate DTS’s technology.

In order to achieve a smooth user interface and access to all the content a viewer might want, the 805, 855 and 865 TVs all use the Android 9 (Pie) smart TV OS which also allows voice control with both Google Assistant built-in and Works with Alexa capabilities.

Further control is possible by using the new premium remote control which has backlit keys for easier use in dark viewing environments and a metallised finish with leather sides and backing.

Philips prides itself on the European Design of its TV and the 805, 855 and 865 all sport an ultra slim chassis, edgeless bezels and high-quality metal finish.  However, they are distinguished from one another by individual stands as follows:

  • OLED805 -  new stand with chamfered sides, finished in dark chrome
  • OLED855 -  new rotatable, central stand angled to the table in dark chrome
  • OLED865 - new rotatable, central stand angled to the table but finished in responsibly sourced leather from Scottish leather specialists Muirhead

All of the stands are designed to give the impression that the sets are floating above the table-top, an effect enhanced in a dark room by the inclusion of 3-sided Ambilight.

The 805, 855 and 865 ranges will be on sale in the UK from July. No prices are currently available.
