Panasonic announce 6 new Freeview Recorders

DVD Recording back for archivers

by Mark Hodgkinson Sep 29, 2015

  • Panasonic has announced six new PVRs (Personal Video Recorders), with various recording and playback capabilities, are to be added to its range of video products.
New features making their way on to some of them include Freeview Play, TV Anywhere and 4K networking, with the DMR-BWT850 topping the range.

Freeview Play combines catch-up TV, on-demand services and live television to make watching what you want, when you want as easy as possible. It’s free from subscription and compatible with existing broadband services and lets you select from 60, or more, live programmes and other unrecorded programmes from up to 7 days ago. And if you’ve ever used YouView, you’ll pretty much know what you’re dealing with. Freeview Play will be available on compatible players from November 2015.

New to this year’s models is TV Anywhere– a feature that can send recordings and live TV broadcasts over the internet to smartphones or tablets outside the house. We’ve seen it with some of the flagship VIERA TVs and it’s a very neat feature! You can even use it abroad, whatever next? For further convenience you can also record programmes both at home and while you’re away. The required Panasonic Media Center app should make the TV Anywhere recording and watching nice and easy to use.

The 2015 range provides 4K Networking via 4K Video Playback and 4K JPEG Playback and the BWT850, PWT655 and PWT550 further include 4K ULTRA HD upscaling. These models also let you record 4K content, if you can find any, onto their built-in HDD and view 4K video recorded to SD card by Panasonic LUMIX cameras and camcorders.

It doesn’t look as though the included Amazon and Netflix apps are Ultra HD versions, however; there’s also a BBC iPlayer app and high resolution audio support for FLAC and WAV.

In addition to the newly announced features, these models also have technologies from the extremely solid 2014 range including a twin HD recorder for recording multiple channels, multiroom TV Streaming and built in Wi-Fi.

Alongside its new Blu-ray and HDD models, Panasonic is also launching a new DVD Recorder to complete its 2015 line-up. The Freeview+ compatible DMR-EX97 can pause and rewind live programmes and is intended for those looking to archive their contents on DVD or to the 500-GB HDD.

We’re waiting to hear back from Panasonic on price and release date details. Hopefully we’ll get some of these in to test once they’re released.
