Monitor Audio launches IMS-4 music streamer

Zone out, man

by Andy Bassett

Monitor Audio, although probably best known for its loudspeakers, has unveiled the IMS-4 music streamer which features BluOS and Apple AirPlay 2 and is suitable for custom installations where premium sound quality is required.

The IMS-4 features BluOS technology which allows the IMS-4 to stream lossless music at a quality of up to 24-bit/192khz to 4 zones in a home network and allow access to music services and music libraries all via the BluOS controller app. Additionally, voice control via Alexa or Google Assistant using smart devices is supported.

Moreover, for more extensive or fully professional setups, multiple IMS-4s can be combined to provide up to 64 zones, with each zone able to play different streams or perform together in perfect sync. Here, control via the supported integrated control systems such as Crestron, Control 4 or RTI might be more appropriate.

IMS-4 can access millions of Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) recordings using BluOS technology to allow music to be heard exactly as the artist intended, anywhere in the home.

Apple AirPlay 2 provides the IMS-4 with even greater flexibility as Siri allows users to request the track they would like to hear and state the room they would like it to be played in. Like BluOS, Apple AirPlay 2 lets the music be enjoyed separately or in sync throughout the home.

Analogue and digital inputs allow the addition of a cable box or other non-network sources to make them available in every zone. The IMS-4 even includes a system interrupt to let doorbells and fire alarms be heard.

The IMS-4 music streamer joins Monitor Audio’s range of custom install amplifiers such as the IA800-2C and IA150-8C and has a single unit design for easy rack mounting using the included brackets. Its matching livery makes for a pleasing combination with its compatriots in the range.

Michael Hedges, Monitor Audio’s technical director, said, ‘The IMS-4 is an exciting new addition to our extensive range of industry-leading custom installation solutions. I am sure our customers will love its ease of installation, flexibility and powerful performance.
