Surround sound for the MASSes?

  • Going back to a more traditional 5.1 surround sound system approach - no side speakers or ceiling mounted drivers here - Monitor Audio has launched a refresh of its MASS loudspeaker system.
Described by Monitor Audio as “a high performance, compact 5.1 home cinema system comprising five satellite speakers and a subwoofer” the system is suitable for movies and gaming.

Benefiting from new drivers and a new crossover, the MASS range also draws upon established technology found in Monitor Audio’s existing stable of speakers.
The satellites use a two-way sealed design featuring a 19mm tweeter and an 89mm mid-bass driver with MMPII (Metal Matrix Polymer) cone technology.

The active subwoofer is driven by a 120W class D amplifier and uses a 203mm long throw driver which also features an MMPII cone.
The whole package is quick and easy to set up and offers three preset modes (Music, Movie and Impact) to get straight to the most appropriate sound for your activity.

Available in a choice of cover finishes, Midnight (black-blue) and Mist (white-grey), the specifically made cloth covers have been developed to be acoustically transparent and to give the feel of soft furnishing. The satellite speakers also feature a cloth-wrapped rear cover to hide cables and connections.

The bespoke stands are carefully designed to give the best listening position and complement the speakers' overall look. They feature a precision cut base and pole and an integrated bracket to allow simple speaker attachment and a channel to discreetly hide the speaker cable.

The second generation iteration of the MASS range might not have all the bells and whistle of a 7.1 or Atmos setup but its appeal lies in the plug and play simplicity, ease of use and pleasingly attractive design.

The whole 5.1 MASS surround system costs £600 and a pair of stands (available in black or white) costs £100.
