McIntosh launches MCD85 SACD/CD player

Music fans who continue to cherish their CD libraries still have a range of hardware opportunities to indulge their format of choice and now another option becomes available in the form of the McIntosh MCD85 SACD/CD player.

Combining the latest McIntosh digital technologies to bring new life to CD and SACD libraries along with USB connectivity for McIntosh sound quality from everyday digital devices, the open-chassis MCD85 SACD/CD player is the company’s latest compact product and has been designed to complement the recently launched MC830 Solid State Amplifier and C8 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier.

The MCD85 SACD/CD player‘s internal DAC is an advanced quad balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit/192 kHz device. In keeping with its true stereo nature, 4 of the DAC pathways are dedicated to the left audio channel and 4 are committed to the right.

The high quality die-cast tray delivers quiet, smooth disc handling and features a new, custom front beveled nose to match the angle of the chassis. The high quality disc mechanism uses a twin-laser consisting of a single objective lens. The two laser units each employ a different wavelength optimised for either CD or SACD. Additionally, the 2x read speed and memory buffer provide better error correction and tracking.

Away from music stored on optical media, the MCD85 SACD/CD Player benefits from a USB input which supports high-resolution audio up to DSD256 and DXD 384 kHz and the advanced internal DAC enables playback from smart devices, computers and USB-equipped devices, with an extra two coaxial and two optical (192kHz-capable) digital inputs also provided. Playback of AAC, AIFF, ALAC, DSD (up to DSD128), FLAC, MP3, WAV and WMA files is supported.

The MCD85 SACD/CD Player features both balanced and unbalanced fixed analogue stereo outputs in order to connect to other high-performance home audio equipment and McIntosh’s Power Control and Data Ports allow for seamless integration with other McIntosh components.

The usual eye-catching and definitive McIntosh design is on display with a die-cast aluminium name badge affixed to each side of the chassis and a mirror finish chassis to match the MC830 and C8 devices. There’s also direct LED backlighting behind the black glass front panel and an illuminated logo plus silver trim and rotary control knobs.

The MCD85 SACD./CD Player is available for pre order from authorised McIntosh dealers at a price of £4,995. Shipping is expected in March 2021 (UK) and Feb (United States and Canada).
