McIntosh and Sonus faber bought by Highlander Partners

There can be more than one...

by Ian Collen

The private investment firm Highlander Partners has announced the acquisition of the McIntosh Group, which not only includes the titular audio specialist, but also the likes of Sonus faber and Sumiko.

In a press release, Highlander Partners states that the McIntosh Group will “serve as an anchor for a new Highlander luxury technology platform” and the company seems keen on adding more brands from the AV community to its expanding portfolio. No specifics were given on the financial factors involved, but it will be interesting to see just how this acquisition will affect the future of McIntosh and Sonus faber – who were stablemates under the Fine Sounds UK distribution venture which, as part of the McIntosh Group, is presumably included as part of the deal.

Assuming this is a good deal for all involved, the added investment from a firm that has more than $2 billion worth of assets under its management, could certainly benefit the likes of McIntosh as it targets its next generation of high-quality audio products into 2023 and beyond. It’s worth noting that the McIntosh Group also handles distribution through several major regions, including the UK and North America, for companies such as Pro-Ject and Rotel, although whether the new ownership of Dallas-based Highlander Partners will affect this (for better or worse) remains to be seen.

Speaking on the announcement, Jeff L. Hull, Highlander Partners president and CEO commented: "We have been evolving our investment strategy around consumer-focused brands and luxury goods over several years. The opportunity to acquire brands as strong as those within the McIntosh Group does not come often and we are very excited to be part of the Company's next chapter. We believe there is a unique opportunity to acquire other consumer luxury technology brands and intend to stay active in the category."

Jeff Poggi and Charles Randall, co-CEOs of the McIntosh Group also stated: "We are thrilled to continue to pursue our growth trajectory alongside the Highlander team. Across all brands and product categories we continue to see remarkable results and an excess of opportunity; we believe Highlander's financial approach and operational expertise can help seize these prospects."

Further comment was provided by Ben Slater, partner at Highlander, who added: "McIntosh Group sits at the intersection of several strong trends that we are eager to be a part of. The residential environment is rapidly evolving, with technology becoming an integral component throughout the home. Moreover, consumers across the demographic spectrum are demanding high fidelity audio now more than ever, and premium brands such as McIntosh and Sonus Faber are increasingly viewed as functional pieces of art."
