LG introduces new GP9 UltraGear Gaming Speaker

Gearing up for games

by Andy Bassett

The GP9 is LG's first ever audio solution designed from the ground up for gamers, forms part of its UltraGear range and brings a high quality DAC, game optimised immersive audio, a compact design and two-way communication to the table... or rather gaming desk.

With gaming on the increase and feedback from some sections of players indicating that long sessions wearing headphones can become uncomfortable, LG has unveiled the GP9 Ultra Gear Gaming Speaker, a stylish yet unobtrusive desktop sound solution that provides seamless compatibility with PCs and the latest gaming consoles for a three-dimensional, game-optimised audio experience.

The GP9 features a built-in Quad ES9038PRO DAC normally reserved for high end Hi-Fi devices and can therefore deliver Hi-Res Audio with compatible titles. Moreover, it can act as a discrete sound card for PC gamers providing access to professionally tuned EQ settings via a companion app and the sharing of custom sound settings for specific games with other gamers.

The new speaker boasts LG’s proprietary 3D Gaming Sound technology which incorporates a specially-designed HRTF (head-related transfer function) algorithm to tailor a game’s audio according to genre. This delivers a realistic sense of space, position and directionality, all without a cumbersome headset.

There are two modes which customise games audio: FPS Mode which allows first-person shooter game fans to hear the smallest of details, while RTS Mode ups the realism with genuine spatial sound to aid immersion in real-time strategy, racing and other games. And thanks to support for DTS Headphone:X, the LG UltraGear Gaming Speaker can provide convincing 7.1 virtual surround sound should a player decide to wear headphones after all.

All important voice chat with fellow online players is possible with the GP9 which sports built-in mics that leverage LG’s unique echo-cancellation algorithm which can distinguish a user’s voice from game sounds and background noises.

The space saving form factor reduces distraction and the easy to reach, top mounted control buttons make it easy to change microphone, volume and sound modes on the fly. For those that are happy with a bit of extra background enhancement, the GP9 comes with customisable RGB lighting.

There’s a number of connectivity options including optical cable and USB-C and the GP9 offers wireless and Bluetooth for pairing with laptops, tablets or smartphones to enjoy music or video content.

Designed as the perfect companion to LG’s premium UltraGear gaming monitors, the GP9 is equally well suited to pair with a whole range of other gaming displays with its ‘tactical’ matte black finish and understated metallic elements.

The new speaker will be launching in key markets worldwide starting in South Korea and the United States as well as select markets in Europe starting from September.
