LG’s 2021 lineup of soundbars begins its global rollout in April with the brand-new SP11RA, SP9YA, SP8YA, SP7Y and SPD7Y models.
Launching in key markets in Europe and North America this month, with additional products coming later this year, LG’s newly announced soundbar models share a range of features including Meridian Audio technology - plus the new Meridian Horizon feature - compatibility with Hi-Res audio and AI Sound Pro across the entire range. LG’s AI features further elevate the user experience with AI Room Calibration in the three higher end units.
The full lineup, from the 770W 7.1.4 SP11RA flagship descending through the SP9YA, SP8YA and SP7Y to the affordable 380W 3.1.2 SPD7Y, all take advantage of LG TV’s AI Sound Pro feature which allows audio from the TV to be played through the soundbar via TV Sound Mode Share, thus delivering the superior audio processing power of AI Sound Pro on the more capable speakers of the new soundbars. Moreover, LG’s soundbars now offer all of the same sound modes as the latest TVs, allowing users to easily switch between the soundbar and the TV using the TV remote.
LG’s ongoing partnership with Meridian sees the 2021 soundbars offer a new innovation called Meridian Horizon technology. This new feature up-mixes two channel stereo content into immersive, multichannel audio to provide audiences with a more immersive listening experience regardless of their position in the room. And Meridian Audio tuning means the latest models deliver an exceptionally authentic experience when in Music Mode.
While the top of the range SP11RA combines its upfiring front height channels with wireless rear upfiring speakers as standard, the remainder of the models including the 520W 5.1.2 channel SP9YA plus the 3.1.2 SP8YA and the 5.1 SP7Y - both using 440W of power - can take advantage of the optional SPK8 rear speaker package to increase their sound stage.
Support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X is present across the range, though in the case of the SP7Y, it’s the DTS: X Virtual variety, and most models have Dolby Vision compatibility via 4K pass-through, the SP7Y again being the exception.
Hi-Res Audio certification ensures lossless playback at 24bit/96kHz and connectivity includes eARC which enables higher bitrate, high resolution content and uncompressed Dolby Atmos audio with just one cable across all models bar the SP7Y, which makes do with standard ARC. USB playback and Bluetooth streaming are also available to offer more convenient ways for users to enjoy audio content on the latest models.
Across the SP11RA, SP9YA and SP8YA soundbar units, AI Room Calibration offers optimal sound in any environment, using spatial awareness technology to measure a room’s dimensions upon which the soundbar’s audio settings are customised in accordance with the specific characteristics of the space. In addition, AI Sound Pro uses adaptive sound control to automatically adjust frequency range and sound field extension, depending on which genre of content the user is watching, be it news, music or movies.
LG has also taken steps to lessen the environmental impact of its latest soundbar products with careful consideration of the processes, materials and packaging used, and the 2021 soundbars are among the first audio products in the industry to receive SGS Eco Product Certification.
