LG Display to showcase Transparent OLED at CES 2021

LG Display will be bringing its Transparent OLED screens to CES 2021 in a range of demonstrations illustrating how the technology can be used in everyday situations.

LG Display’s Transparent OLED technology is geared to deliver lifestyle improvements with many potential uses and benefits which the company reckons people will encounter on a daily basis.

Transparent OLED’s superior 40 percent transparency compared to LCD’s 10 percent, plus its self-emitting pixels which provide high image quality without the need for backlights, means LG Display sees Transparent OLED in a range of applications across smart homes, smart buildings, and transportation in the fields of autonomous vehicles, aircraft and subways.

Some of these situations will be demonstrated at CES 2021 in the company’s online showroom, including in the Smart Home Zone where a Smart Bed will feature a 55-inch Transparent OLED display rising in its frame at the foot of the bed at the touch of a button. This screen will show information or TV contents in various screen ratios. To reduce speaker clutter around the bedroom, the frame has Cinematic Sound OLED (CSO) embedded within and the Smart Bed’s frame can be detached and moved to other locations around the home to fulfill the needs of other family members.

In LG DIsplay’s Restaurant Zone, a sushi bar setup will show how it’s possible to use the Transparent OLED as a screen for menu information and ordering as well as providing TV or movie content while the food is prepared. Moreover, where social distancing is required, the display can be used as a partition which maintains contact with other people and also provides shared entertainment.

Transportation applications of the company’s 55-inch Transparent OLED includes replacing traditional windows so that passengers can view the passing scenery yet still access information such as underground station maps, weather information and other news in transit.

LG Display is currently the only transparent OLED manufacturer in the world and says it is seeing growing demand for Transparent OLED from companies.

Jong-sun Park, Senior Vice President & Head of the Commercial Business Unit at LG Display, said, “Transparent OLED is a technology that maximizes the advantages of OLED and can be used in various places in our daily lives, from stores, shopping malls, and architectural interiors to autonomous vehicles, subway trains, and aircraft.” He added, “It will grow into a next-generation display that can change the existing display paradigm.”
