LG Display set to launch its own 27 and 32-inch OLED panels in 2023?

According to reports, LG Display is set to start producing 27- and 32-inch versions of its OLED panels later this month – with the first products making use of them due to arrive in the New Year.

The story first emerged in Korean newspaper Hankooki, stating that LG Display was planning to substantially expand upon its existing collection of smaller-sized TVs and monitors, with a significant increase in production of its own WOLED (WRGB OLED) panels. It’s a move that will likely see the wider LG family looking to gain a firmer foothold in markets such as second-screen TVs and gaming/business monitors as it adapts to evolving consumer demands – with the first 27-inch LG Display-equipped LG Electronics model expected to target that TV-gaming crossover when it hits in Q1 2023, along with the 32-inch model that's set to follow.

It looks like LG's next showcase event might need to edit this 'Evolution of Size' illustration.

LG Electronics already produces 27- and 31.5-inch Ultra Fine OLED Pro monitors using panels supplied by the Japanese manufacturer JOLED. The JOLED technology uses a different inkjet-based system for its OLED panels which is suited to smaller screens, and now it looks like LG Display is ready to adopt its own take on the otherwise costly process of making an efficient OLED screen in smaller sizes – with its 42-inch C2 model proving a notable step down in size (if not price) earlier in the year.

As yet there are no specifics on these potentially new-sized LG Display panels, or the products planning to use them, although those Ultra Fine OLED Pro models offer up 4K UHD, with 8M Pixel Dimming and a million to one contrast ratio. However, they’re designed for high-end professional use and so don’t come cheap, with the 31.5-inch EP950 currently priced at £3,299 ($3,999), compared to the £1,399 (currently reduced to £999) a 42-inch C2 TV would cost you. This means there might need to be some concessions to squeeze similar technology into a more affordable TV or gaming monitor solution, which may well be the case with the first products to use the new panels.

LG's existing 27- and 32-inch models use JOLED panels and target the high-end professional market.

Of course, there’s no reason why LG has to stop at just the 27- and 32-inch models, and there’s a good chance that you’ll see a wider range of options in that 20-to-42-inch range, as the company switches its attention to the smaller screens rather than the likes of its much-hyped 97-inch G2 OLED (reportedly launching in the US for a mere $25,000). Not that these super-sized screens – which are expensive to produce and so can come with suitably sizeable price tags – are going to drop off its portfolio any time soon, but clearly LG sees scope for growth (or at least healthy profits) in the rather more scaled-down sizes.

We’d expect to find out a whole lot more by the time CES wraps up in January – but in the meantime let us know what you’d like to see from these smaller displays, both in terms of functionality and pricing. Is there a good market for high-end (and high-priced) monitors among the likes of the professional creative community, or would more affordable second-screen TVs/gaming combos be the smarter way to go?

LG release the smallest screen size yet for an OLED TV and it's a belter! Will this 42-incher find its way into your living room or as a desktop monitor? It's certainly our choice for the small screen TV of the year!
