LG Display OLED TV panels Eco Product certified

OLED TV panels from LG Display, the world’s largest manufacturer of organic light emitting diode displays for televisions have been awarded Eco Product certification from SGS.

Swiss based SGS, the globally recognised leader in inspection, verification and testing, has certified LG Display’s OLED TV panels as eco-friendly products with low emissions of hazardous substances.

The Eco Product award comes after fellow international safety standards companies UL and TUV Rheinland tested and recognised LG Display’s OLED TV panels as having low blue light emission by awarding the ‘Low Blue Light Display’ Verified Mark and ‘Eye Comfort’ badges respectively.

This combination of assurances that LG Display’s OLED TV displays have reduced impact on viewers’ health comes at a time when people are spending more and more time in front of the television under lockdown conditions as the global Covid-19 pandemic persists.

SGS tested and confirmed the panels’ positive environmental and health criteria in three categories: lowering of indoor air pollutants; the reduction of hazardous substances; and high recyclability.

The results showed that OLED TV panels’ emissions of total volatile organic compounds - often associated with health risks that lead to ‘sick building syndrome' - were more than 50% lower than those of LCD TV panels. VOCs tend to be released by plastic compounds and LCD based TVs have more plastic layers to make up the necessary backlight technologies whereas the self-luminous OLED pixels require no backlight.

Moreover, OLED TV panels do not use components that contain hazardous substances such as cadmium and indium phosphide, both recognized carcinogens, which can sometimes be found in high end LCD products.

And since OLED manufacturing uses fewer parts than LCD equivalents and is seeing enhanced resource efficiency with improved techniques, recycling and resource management is improving.

Dr. Oh Chang-ho, Executive Vice President and Head of TV Business Unit at LG Display, said, “As indoor TV viewing time increases due to COVID-19, interest in TV products that are both comfortable for viewers’ eyes and eco-friendly is also rising. ” He added, “OLED is the best TV technology in the COVID-19 era, considering that it not only takes into account excellent picture quality but also health and the environment.

LG Display has also introduced its own Eco Index as a way of measuring, monitoring and developing its processes to improve its use of recycled materials, lower its energy consumption, and reduce its use of hazardous substances.
