Fresh from the release of the premium Celestee headphone, Focal changes tack slightly with the newly announced Clear Mg Professional - a headset aimed at engineers and producers but of interest to audio fans who may wish to replicate the experience of listening to the best monitors.
The French audio brand has improved on the performance of the first Clear Professional headphone and presents the Clear Mg Professional as a circum-aural open-back replacement, designed for quality and transfer speed.
Whereas the first iteration of the headphone incorporated 40mm full range speaker drivers with aluminium/magnesium ‘M’-shaped inverted domes, the Clear Mg Professional uses the same drivers but swaps out the material for pure magnesium (hence the ‘Mg’ Periodic Table tag in the new name). This development is the culmination of four years of research with the newer material providing an even more optimised combination of the key criteria for speaker drivers of lightness, rigidity and damping.
A honeycomb internal grille inside the earcup extends high frequencies and follows the M-Shaped profile of the new cone which is combined with a frameless 25mm diameter, 5.5mm high copper voice coil leading to improved detail across the full spectrum while preserving tonal balance. With a 24kHz break-up, the high frequencies are extremely linear and the transient signals are respected.
With long sessions ahead in the studio, the Clear Mg Professional has been designed to both look good and be comfortable. The headband, which is constructed from perforated microfibre and leather, has been designed with a constant curve to distribute the weight of the headphones evenly across the listener’s head, while the solid aluminium yoke is coated in scratch restaurant black paint and moulds to the wearer’s face shape.
The new generation of perforated microfibre earcup cushions result in an extremely open design and the red of the cushion blends with the black external honeycomb grille on the external earcup which has a wider opening to amplify the sensation of wide spatialisation with a precise soundstage.
Finally, the thermoformed carrying case is shaped to fit the Clear Mg Professional and is woven in colours to match the headphones.
