Focal announces Astral 16 AV processor
French AV company, Focal, are well known for their high-end speakers and headphones. Now they have released their Astral 16 Audio Visual amplifier and processor, the result of a collaboration with ultra high-end electronics company, Immersive Audio.
This 16 channel AV processor is Focal’s first such product and is the result of their aim to create a complete home cinema experience.

Utilizing a Class D Pascal amplifier, 12 of the channels are amplified (200W at 8 ohms) and 4 are pre-amplified acting as dedicated audio channels which feature Digital Signal Processors for filtering, equalisation and bass management and culminating in balanced XLR outputs.High resolution audio up to 192kHz is supported.
The Astral 16 supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X 3D object-based audio formats for an immersive sound experience. In addition, the Astral 16 can upmix stereo and non 3D sound sources to provide the impression of full height and surround effects.

There are 7 HDMI inputs and 2 HDMI outputs, one of which is eARC compatible which means that 7.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats can be handled without compression when sent to other audio devices such as soundbars. The HMDI ports are HDCP 2.2 compatible and thus support the latest audio and video formats.

Inputs include 3 each of coaxial and optical digital inputs while there are 4x RCA analogue inputs.
Included in the package is the Dirac Live room calibration suite plus a microphone and 10 metres of cabling. These are used to measure the effect that the room has on the audio output and then to calculate the adjustments necessary to remove any audio colouration effect caused by the environment’s characteristics. It’s possible to create different room profiles too, so a home cinema setup in one room can have a completely different calibration setup to a music room using different speakers.

Control is via an iOS app which also allows technical support and diagnostics at any time via Remote Monitoring. No word about software for Android users though.

For users wanting custom installation, the Astral 16 is compatible with interfaces from Control4, Crestron, Savant and RTI.

The Astra 16 is available in June at an SRP of £19,999 / €20,000
