First Poster and Trailer for Poltergeist Remake
Looks like Carol Anne will be told not to go into the light again this summer.
In yet another sign that Hollywood seems bereft of any original ideas these days, the remake of Poltergeist arrives this summer. It's definitely a sign that you're getting old when films you loved as a kid are being re-made, re-booted or re-whatever. However, it's more than just the passage of years that worries us these days. It seems that as budgets inflate out of all proportion, Hollywood is terrified to take any risks. As a result the summer months are filled with sequels, re-makes, re-boots and film version versions of established brands.

Poltergeist

The original Poltergeist was made back-to-back with E.T. in 1982 and was produced, some would argue directed, by Steven Spielberg at the height of his creative powers. Under DGA rules a member couldn't direct two different films simultaneously, so ostensibly Spielberg handed the director's megaphone to Tobe Hooper. However the film feels far more like a Spielberg film than the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Spielberg's fingerprints are clearly all over it. Literally in the case of the scene where the guy pulls his own face off in the mirror - those are Spielberg's hands that you see. Anyone who grew up in the 80s will remember the demonic clown, the tree, the Beast and Jerry Goldsmith's fantastic score.
With plenty of rubbish films begging to be remade, why choose one they got right the first time?
It was a film that perfectly captured a combination of childish fears and genuine horror. Hooper may have been playing Christian Nyby to Spielberg's Howard Hawks but the results were just as impressive as The Thing from Another World. Now it's Gil Kenan's turn to retell the story with modern effects, although ILM's efforts back in 1982 were pretty good. Kenan made the excellent Monster House back in 2006 and the presence of Sam Raimi as a producer and the always reliable Sam Rockwell as the star is promising. So perhaps they can successfully put a modern spin on the idea; we'll get our first look at the trailer tomorrow and find out for sure on the 31st of July.
