Falcon Acoustics introduces Limited Edition LS3/5A monitor
Falcon Acoustics have the licence to produce the renowned LS3/5A monitor used by the BBC and have created the ‘Kingswood Warren’ model in a limited edition format….. so hurry, if you have the readies.
The ‘Kingswood Warren’ version of the LS3/5A monitor is based on the 1974 handmade prototype before it went into commercial production two years later.

Named in memory of the BBC’s Kingswood Warren Technical Research Department, where the LS3/5A first took shape, Falcon Acoustics have gone to some lengths to re-create this venerable speaker.
Made of graded 9mm Baltic Ply, the cabinets are damped, finished in Teak veneer and have screw backs. They are built to look, perform and sound exactly as they would have done in 1974. Falcon used the original BBC LS3/5A cabinets Nos 3 and 4, along with hand-written notes from BBC engineering staff to guide production.

The BBC’s original crossover used a size of radio-metal lamination that is no longer available for the creation of transformer-style inductors which also featured an ingenious clamping system. Thanks to Falcon’s founder Malcolm Jones, enough material was sourced to be able to replicate these key components for the 50 pair production run.

Production of the capacitors faced a similar material sourcing issue since the original BBC specification called for a Polycarbonate dielectric film, the production of which ended almost twenty years ago. A limited supply of the film was located and Falcon has recreated the BBC crossover from 1972/74 exactly. Polycarbonate capacitors offer extraordinary stability, speed, accuracy, and unrivalled depth of tone and soundstage.

Finally, in order to re-engineer the original KEF B110 and T27 drivers units, Falcon once again called upon Malcolm Jones who, as Chief Design Engineer at KEF, designed the originals in the 1960s.

Bespoke rose-gold plated terminals and badges, and an antique-leather style folding front presentation case complete this Limited Edition of 50 pairs. No further replications are possible and Falcon Acoustics plans to present a pair of ‘Kingswood Warren’ Limited Edition LS3/5As to the BBC.

The LS3/5A was originally used by the BBC in outside broadcast vans to ensure the quality of their broadcasts. The speaker concept set out transparent and natural sound as the goal, and the achievement of the end result is widely acknowledged.

The 'Kingswood Warren' model comes as close as possible to replicating this original LS3/5A sound and will be appearing at the Bristol Hi-Fi Show 22nd - 24th February 2019.
