Elipson launches 3230 loudspeaker at Bristol Hi-Fi Show

Lasting legacy

by Andy Bassett

French Hi-Fi company Elipson has chosen the Bristol Hi-Fi Show to host the UK launch of the flagship 3230 speaker entry to its Legacy range.

One of France’s oldest manufacturers of Hi-Fi components, Elipson has used its 80 plus years to make a name for itself as a designer of innovative acoustic technology, and the new Legacy range of high-end audiophile two-channel loudspeakers, embodies the brand's Hi-Fi heritage. The series reconnects innovations derived from the company's legendary speakers with avant-garde design and the current Planet L and M spherical speakers.

Using bespoke components, cabinetry, loudspeaker drive units and filters, the new Legacy range consists of a stand-mount/bookshelf speaker, the Legacy 3210, and two floor-standing speakers, the flagship 3230 and smaller 3220.

On show from 21st to 23rd Feb at Bristol will be the 3230, a 3-way floorstander with a large bass-reflex lower enclosure, stiffened by internal bracing and tuned to around 26Hz.

The driver array consists of two 21cm (8.3-inch) bass drivers that feature aluminium-surfaced cellulose-pulp cones and which are mechanically compressed by steel rods to the rear. Contained in the 25 x 30 mm MDF cabinet, these work together up to 400Hz.

The cabinet is encased with wood veneer wrapped around large radius curved walls and it contains two types of damping materials. There is also a large diameter profiled port between the enclosure and the base plinth which is mounted on suspended points.

Moving up to the eye catching 15 mm thick silica-resin sphere mounted on top of the cabinet, this houses a 15cm (6-inch) ceramic cone mid/bass unit with neodymium magnet which operates at between 400 and 3200Hz. At this point a wide AMT ribbon tweeter takes over for the higher frequencies.

The second order crossover features a high-pass slope of 24 dB/octave for the tweeter, and OFC wiring places four conductors on each polarity and ends with a double terminal block with wired insulated straps.
