Disney+ UK introduces GroupWatch co-viewing feature

A new feature called GroupWatch aims to bring viewers together and is now available to UK subscribers of the Disney+ streaming service.

GroupWatch is a real-time shared viewing experience that allows friends and family to watch favourite shows and films in the Disney+ library (including all Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, Pixar, National Geographic fan faves and more), together wherever they are in the UK using a safe virtual co-viewing connection.

Watching movies and TV is always a more satisfying experience when shared with those close to you and in the current climate, with cinemas in hibernation and millions of people back under lockdown measures, those experiences are even more important.

DisneyPlus’s GroupWatch allows up to seven subscribers to synchronise a viewing experience whether viewing via web, mobile, connected TV devices or smart TVs and share their reactions in real time. The host is the only one who can start the stream but all participants can control the viewing experience to allow for pauses for bathroom breaks or to make the all important cup of tea or even to rewind and watch a favourite moment again.

Included as part of the £5.99 Disney+ monthly subscription, the experience is launched using the GroupWatch icon found on the Details page of the selected series or movie. A link is then created that can be sent to six other subscribers using a mobile or web device. While watching, viewers can react in real time with six different emojis including ‘like’, ‘funny’, ‘sad’, ‘angry’, ‘scared’ and ‘surprised’ through the Disney+ app.

The GroupWatch feature is already available to subscribers in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia and now arrives in time for UK viewers to experience the upcoming second season of The Mandalorian with their friends and family across the country on October 30th.

Jerrell Jimerson, SVP, Product, Disney+, commented, “Storytelling comes alive when you’re able to share and enjoy it with others, and in this moment when many are still apart from their friends and family, GroupWatch offers a way to safely connect virtually by co-viewing your favorite Disney+ stories with your favorite people from the comfort of your living room.”
