Denon launches PMA-150H network amp

Networking to make connections

by Andy Bassett
Mixing up Denon’s renowned audio heritage with the needs of today’s (and tomorrow’s) audiophile, the PMA-150H Network-Enabled Digital Amplifier offers high fidelity playback from digital and analogue sources along with ease of use features in a modern package born from the Denon Design Series.
Designed to keep up with the changing ways music is consumed throughout the home, the PMA-150H offers what Denon describes as nearly unlimited connectivity using HEOS Built-in technology to access Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect and more. There’s also an FM/DAB+ radio tuner, a USB-DAC and the company’s Advanced AL32 Processing Plus and Direct Digital Feedback Amplification (DDFA) technologies to help improve the listening experience.

Drawing on Denon’s history of making sure to use only world-class audio components to meet expected standards and ensure quality sonics, the PMA-150H is comprised of carefully selected and custom-designed electrical components.

The amplifier delivers 70 watts per channel power output (4 ohms, 1kHz, THD: 0.1%) and can easily drive both 4- and 8-ohm speakers to get the best performance from a wide range of options. Comprising four amps, which use next-generation Direct Digital Feedback Amplification (DDFA), the output is free of internal or external analogue noise. Also on board is a dedicated ultra-low distortion wideband headphone amplifier paired with a fully discrete final output stage. This incorporates an adjustable control with three settings for low, medium and high impedance headphone models and it can accommodate both home and professional studio headphones via a 6.3mm jack.

Support for Hi-Res audio playback of files up to 192 kHz/24-bit, as well as DSD 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz tracks, is present and there is additional support elevated up to PCM 384 kHz/32bit and DSD 11.2MHz when connected to the premium onboard USB-DAC input, e.g. via a PC or laptop. Also featured is the latest in analogue waveform reproduction technology from Denon, called Advanced AL32 Processing Plus, this supports highly detailed audio reproduction to enjoy music exactly as it was engineered to be heard.

Access to a wide range of music sources is available via analogue and digital connections. Two analogue RCA inputs, two optical inputs, one digital coaxial input and USB-A and B inputs enable the best possible sound from nearly any source such as CD players, turntables, TVs and more. The front panel mounted USB-A input will support thumb drives with WMA, MP3, AAC, WAV/FLAC/ALAC files.

For those wanting to get the best from streaming options, the HEOS Built-in wireless system enables listeners to access music from a variety of services, including Amazon Music, Spotify (Premium & Free), TIDAL, TuneIn Internet Radio, SoundCloud, Napster, Deezer, as well as local music file libraries, and then stream to other HEOS compatible devices such as speakers, AV receivers or soundbars. In this way, the whole home can experience the same song in every room, or each listener can choose a separate tune for their own particular listening environment.

Connecting a plethora of smart devices and iOS based products is easy too with Bluetooth and AirPlay 2 functionality included. Want to connect to Apple-based music and podcast libraries? AirPlay allows the PMA-150H to be grouped with other AirPlay compatible speakers to stream content throughout the home.

And the PMA-150H has smart credentials too, in territories where Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri and Google Assistant are available, users can use simple voice commands to control the key functions of the device.

Finally, Denon has bought its AV receiver engineering expertise to bear and built autosensing into the first optical port to make connecting your TV easy and enable volume control and input selection on the PMA-15H by using your TV remote.

The PMA-150H is housed in a chassis sporting an OLED screen and diamond-cut volume ring and the 5mm aluminium top and bottom panels are designed to minimize vibration and support cooling.

The PMA-150H is priced at £1,099 / US$1,099 / €1,199 and will be available in September from authorised Denon retailers.
