Twentieth Century Fox's record with its superheroes hasn't been that good and no one got worse treatment than Deadpool.Despite the fact that his most famous trait is his acerbic wit and despite being nick-named "the merc with a mouth" for some inexplicable reason the executives at Fox sewed his mouth shut in the awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Thankfully that film has been consigned to the dustbin marked 'non-canon', so we will soon be getting a new Deadpool movie but this time they're going to do it right. That means strong language, ultra-violence and plenty of jokes.
There's absolutely no reason why comic book movies can't be adult in nature and as Marvel has proved with their Netflix series Daredevil, you can successfully combined mature themes with an established character. What's even better is that they're willing to give Ryan Reynolds another go around with the character. He was a great choice for Deadpool the first time and it's not his fault that X-Men Origins: Wolverine was rubbish, any more than it was his fault The Green Lantern didn't work out.
So it looks as though 2016 could be the year the comic book movie grows up with more Marvel on Netflix and David Ayer's Suicide Squad looking as though it will struggle to keep a kid-friendly rating. In the meantime we've got Deadpool to cheer up those dark winter nights when it opens on the 5th of February 2016.
