Creative launches Dolby Atmos SXFI Carrier soundbar

Small footprint… big soundstage

by Andy Bassett

A joint development with Dolby Laboratories, the Creative SXFI Carrier is the world’s first soundbar with Super X-Fi Headphone Holography, recreating a surround sound system for the headphone wearer.

Already the winner of three ‘Best of CES’ awards when it was previewed at the tech show in 2020, the Creative SXFI Carrier overcomes the preconceptions of what a compact soundbar should sound like and combines the audio engineering, design, and immersive sound technologies of both Creative Technology and Dolby to create a ‘first-of-its-kind Dolby Atmos Speaker System soundbar’.

Typically, the smaller footprint of a compact soundbar limits the ability to create an expansive soundstage. However, using engineering approaches from the larger X-Fi Sonic Carrier, including the SuperWide technology, the SXFI Carrier can expand the acoustic spread of stereo content.

The seven speakers of the SXFI Carrier each feature their own DSP controlled amplifier and the integration of SuperWide and acoustic concepts from Dolby has led to performance beyond expectations such that sonic signature is the same as that of the 15-driver X-Fi Sonic Carrier. And at 880mm in length, the SXFI Carrier is less than half the size too.

The accompanying 10-inch wireless subwoofer ensures the bass element remains present and correct.

Pankaj Kedia, Managing Director, Emerging Markets, Dolby Laboratories, commented, “We are thrilled to have partnered with Creative to bring this first-of-its-kind sound bar experience to consumers around the world.” Kedia added, “Consumers will be able to enjoy a breathtaking Dolby Atmos experience through an innovative acoustic design developed by Dolby, which is unheard of from such a small compact form factor.”

The SXFI Carrier is also the very first soundbar in the world to come equipped with Super X-Fi Headphone Holography which recreates the soundstage of a surround speaker system in headphones, and personalises it with Artificial Intelligence for a natural listening experience. Thus, the cinematic experience of a visit to the theatre is brought into the home on the user’s headphones.

And since the SXFI Carrier is designed to be at the centre of your home theatre audio experience it comes with plenty of up to date connectivity including Bluetooth, USB-C and USB-A ports. There’s an HDMI eARC port that provides uncompressed and lossless HD audio and two HDMI 2.1 inputs will allow rich sound and high-resolution picture quality to pass through from an 8K video source, such as the latest games consoles from Sony and Microsoft, while compatibility with Dolby Vision adds to the image quality.

Sim Wong Hoo, CEO of Creative, said, “... the SXFI CARRIER gives users the full cinema experience in the safety and comfort of their own homes. Moreover, with Super X-Fi Headphone Holography, users can enjoy a Dolby Atmos powered experience through headphones as well – they will always be in the audio sweet spot, day or night,”

Initially due last year, the SXFI Carrier is priced at £899.99 and is now available on Creative.com
