Cambridge Audio unveils new-look SX speaker series

SX-y refresh

by Andy Bassett

Cambridge Audio’s 2013 SX range of compact and affordable speakers has undergone a refresh for 2020.

With a new matte black finish and redesigned logo, the compact and understated design makes the speakers ideal for partnering with existing audio equipment, whether listeners need just a stereo pair on a bookshelf or a full 7.1 home cinema arrangement. The unobtrusive design means they can slot seamlessly into a variety of spaces and environments.

The new range comprises SX-50 and SX-60 standmount speakers, SX-70 centre speaker, SX-80 floorstanding speaker and the SX-120 subwoofer.

The tweeters incorporated across the range feature a 25mm silk dome that promises a smooth and refined sound with high levels of detail while dedicated dampening foam behind the tweeter diaphragm reduces reflections and helps to create a wide soundstage.

Moving onto the mid/bass drivers and the treated paper cones provide lightness and stiffness which results in an even frequency response with improved tonal realism.

The speakers are easy to drive thanks to optimised woofer magnet systems which deliver high efficiency bass while the crossover units are designed for the most neutral, smooth and phase linear response possible.

At the housing level, the rigid MDF cabinet has been modelled using CAD so that the speaker dimensions minimise standing waves and keep vibration to a minimum.

SX-50 standmount speakers – £179 / $199.99

The entry level SX-50 is a pair of two-way compact standmount speakers for the tightest of spaces. Rear-ported, they have the 25mm silk dome tweeter and a 13.5cm treated paper cone mid/bass driver.

With a slightly larger footprint than their smaller siblings, the SX-60 standmount speakers still offer flexibility in terms of placement. The SX-60s feature a larger 16.5cm paper cone mid/bass driver, and have the port at the front of the speakers.

SX-70 centre speakers – £149 / $179.99

Designed to match perfectly with the rest of the SX range both acoustically and aesthetically for use as part of a home cinema setup, the SX-70 centre speaker has a central 25mm silk dome tweeter flanked either side by a 10cm mid/bass driver which helps ensure a cohesive soundstage across the front channels.

SX-80 floorstanding speakers – £399 / $599.99

The SX-80 is a two-way, rear-ported design with two 16.5cm treated paper cone mid/bass drivers and a 25mm silk dome tweeter to help deliver a full-range soundstage that captures musical scale and weight while also maintaining the speed and finesse of the smaller speakers.

SX-120 subwoofer – £199 / $299.99

Complementing the other models in the SX speaker range and adding deep and well defined bass extension to your music and movies, the SX-120 subwoofer features a powerful 70W RMS amplifier that provides clean, immediate power for the custom 8-inch (20cm) long throw driver. The components have been handpicked and carefully voiced and the SX-120 features individual volume, crossover frequency and phase adjustment for precise set up in your specific room, as well as auto on/off detection that helps conserve power when the subwoofer is not in use.
