Cambridge Audio announces Edge M power amplifier

Edging up the power

by Andy Bassett

British audio specialist Cambridge Audio has added the Edge M monoblock power amplifier to its high-end Edge series of Hi-Fi components.

Released as part of Cambridge Audio’s celebration of its 50-year history, the Edge series of components is now joined by the Edge M power amplifier which takes the design of the current Edge W amplifier and applies it to a monoblock design. The result is twice the power and a more faithful, dynamic sound with less distortion.

The Edge M, in the series' trademark curved housing with an extruded aluminium front, manages to double the Edge W’s power to 200W RMS into 8 ohms since each unit only drives a single speaker. And since the Edge M is fully balanced from input to output, noise and distortion are significantly reduced.

Cambridge Audio’s engineers have mirrored the approach used in the Edge W and used only a minimal number of the best possible sounding components to ensure the fewest barriers to the music, in order to deliver a more faithful reproduction of the original recording.

The company’s unique Class XA amplification used in the Edge A and Edge W amplifiers also finds its way into the Edge M and offers the sound quality of a Class A design but with greater efficiency and less heat produced.  XA amplification also shifts the crossover point out of audible range, resulting in a cleaner sound. Additionally, by using an opposing symmetry twin toroidal transformer design, stray electromagnetic interference is cancelled out.
