Bristol Hi-Fi Show 2021 event cancelled

UK’s longest running Hi-Fi Show faces challenge

by Andy Bassett

Organisers have announced that the Bristol Hi-Fi Show 2021 has been cancelled with alternative options now being explored.

In what was probably an inevitable outcome, the organisers of the annual Bristol Hi-Fi show have taken to Facebook to make the announcement and explain that options such as making the event an online experience are being explored. The message is quoted below:

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing pandemic, we have made the difficult decision not to host the Bristol Show 2021. We are currently looking at options to host a virtual event, so watch this space!

The brief message is a reminder of the enormous disruption still facing society as it attempts a return to anything even approaching normality in the face of a continuing global pandemic.

With the next show planned for Feb 26-28th 2021, a little over 5 months away, the organisers of the UK’s largest gathering of its kind clearly felt that an early decision, no matter how disappointing, would give themselves and the exhibitors plenty of time to make other arrangements in the face of continued uncertainty and ever-changing local lockdowns. The most obvious approach is moving the show online to present a digital experience which will hopefully be available to the many Hi-Fi enthusiasts that make the annual pilgrimage to the Bristol Marriott hotel.

You wont see this sort of thing at the next show.

The Bristol Hi-Fi Show organisers can probably take a small measure of comfort that other high profile AV conventions have taken similar decisions with CES 2021 announcing a digital only event back in July. Meanwhile, IFA, Europe’s largest AV exhibition has already successfully negotiated a huge change to its usual format as it presented an online event with a reduced footprint and shorter in-person experience for invited guests only. The relatively smooth execution of this from 3rd - 5th September 2020 will signal to other organisers that it is still possible to still hold a successful and satisfying experience without risking staff and visitor’s health.
