Bowers & Wilkins launch 600 Series Anniversary Edition speakers

New finishes and an upgraded ‘acoustic brain’

by Andy Bassett

Bowers and Wilkins are celebrating the 25th birthday of its hugely popular and award winning 600 Series speaker range by treating music fans to an Anniversary Edition.

The first 600 Series range of speakers was introduced by the respected UK speaker company back in 1995 and the intervening years have seen a number of iterations and improvements. After making significant changes in 2014 with the introduction of the Decoupled Double Dome Tweeter and then again four years later with the Continuum Cone, 2020 will see the seventh version - the 600 Series Anniversary Edition - which brings with it aesthetic and technical improvements.

One of the advantages the 600 Series has always had is the inclusion of technology implemented further up the pecking order which trickles down into these more affordable speakers. Thus, the 606 model finds itself blessed with the same cone technology as the 805s which themselves are used as control monitors in Abbey Road Studios. The 600 Series range therefore is an appealing gateway speaker range with which music fans who are keen to get to the next level of audio quality can indulge themselves at an affordable price. As a result of this affordability, Bowers & Wilkins describe their 600 Series as 'democratic speakers' for audiophiles and everyday music fans alike, with over 1 million pairs sold around the world.

The added elements on offer in the company’s new 600 Series Anniversary Edition range include a new oak finish for Europe, North America and some parts of Asia along with a red cherry version for APAC Asia territories to add to the existing matte black and matte white finishes. This combines with a new ‘Anniversary’ etched tweeter surround which is available in light and dark tones, depending upon the colour of the speaker.

Aside from new aesthetic flourishes, the acoustic performance has been improved with upgraded crossovers featuring new high-frequency and mid-frequency capacitors as well as new bypass capacitors which first appeared in the recent 700 Signature speakers. These improved components help the 600 Series Anniversary speakers deliver a more transparent and refined sound across the range.

The 600 Series Anniversary range itself features the ‘S2’ specification versions of the 607 compact bookshelf speaker which has a 130mm (5-inch) mid bass Continuum cone and a 25mm aluminium Decoupled Double Dome tweeter, and the slightly larger 606 stand mount model which boosts the mid bass cone to 165mm (6.5-inches). The 603 is a three way flagship floorstander which has a single 150mm FST mid range cone, two 165mm bass cones and of course the 25mm tweeter too. The final model in the range is the updated centre channel HTM6 with two 150mm cones and a 25mm tweeter.

In addition to these new models, which replace the current versions of the 600 Series speakers, there remain the existing ASW608, ASW610 and ASW610XP subwoofers. There is also a special 600 Series Anniversary Edition Theatre pack which includes two 603 S2s for the front left and right channels, two 607 S2s for the rear surrounds, the HTM6 S2 centre channel speaker plus the ASW610 active subwoofer, all to create an effective 5.1 home cinema setup.

Andy Kerr, Director of Product Marketing & Communications at Bowers & Wilkins commented,  “By using our unique, in-house-developed components and technology from higher ranges, we can raise the performance of our entry-level product to new heights and for a very modest premium. The 600 Series has been setting the standard in its category for 25 years and we’re confident our new Anniversary Edition range will carry on that tradition in style.

The 600 Series Anniversary Edition speakers will be available during September at the following prices:
